The Friends of Kings Mountain State Park was established in January 2009 with a mission to preserve and enhance the park for future generations. Our focus is to protect the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Kings Mountain State Park—keeping it a vital reminder of South Carolina’s history and a valuable resource for citizens and visitors alike. Through volunteer efforts, community partnerships, and ongoing support, we work to maintain the park’s trails, facilities, and educational programs so that all may continue to enjoy its rich history and natural splendor.
The primary purpose of the Friends is to:
- Support the mission of Kings Mountain State Park.
- Partner in activities that include environmental education, resource management, and park maintenance.
- Provide volunteer services, including financial, staff, and program support.
- Promote public awareness of the values and benefits of South Carolina’s state parks.
- Assist in the upkeep and preservation of the park’s equestrian and hiking trails.
Join the Friends of Kings Mountain State Park!
The Friends group has worked tirelessly over the years to improve and preserve Kings Mountain State Park. Our accomplishments include:
- Keeping trails cleaned and cleared on the third Saturday of each month, as well as after major storms.
- Building and opening a new 17-mile trail.
- Expanding the equestrian parking area with wash bays, running water, and electricity.
- Currently working to extend power and water to the equestrian campground.
- Supporting related projects, such as building a new hiking bridge.
While much has been achieved, our work is far from finished. To continue making a difference across the entire park, we need involvement from Cultural and Historical groups, Scout troops, Campers, Hikers, Runners, 4-H members, Gardeners, and more.

The Friends of Kings Mountain State Park is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. As such, we are able to seek support from individuals and corporations in ways that park staff cannot. Your contributions directly fund projects that enhance the park, and all donations are tax-deductible.
